DAVAO City’s very own Steve “The Red Knight” Grandeza defeated Al Hassan “Ghanna Van Damme” Okine via unanimous decision after seven rounds of their World Superwelterweight Championship fight at the Chi Garden, The Lodge, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday night.
Grandeza, said: “I am very happy, of course, with humility and pride to have represented the country, Davao City and the Philippine Moo Duk Kwan Soo Bahk Do, Inc. Winning the championship title is extra special for me.”
Grandeza, a 10-time National Open Blackbelt Battle of the Champions Tournament champion, said he used a combination of power and technique to beat Okine with the guidance of his brother-trainer Bryan and coach Edgar.
“I was the underdog during the fight as everyone was cheering for him (Okine). But when the fight started, I felt I was already in control `coz I can see his kicks and punches. I was also able to take his power,” he recalled.
Steve Grandeza was my schoolmate at the University of the Immaculate Conception and we graduated of the same year. That is why when he was featured on TV last night for winning as champion in kickboxing it overwhelmed because I know him and he brings the name of Davao City. To you classmate- CONGRATULATIONS!
